Determination of pluvial Lake Range of Lut based on sedimentary and geomorphological evidences

Climate change is the most important event and Playa on the legacy of the Quaternary climate change. Playa legacies Quaternary climate changes and the special position in Iran, especially in the realms of geomorphological areas are dry. Terraces, alluvial fans and movement sequences coastline, the main evidence base level changes during the Quaternary. Playa and lakes key role in the balance climatic of inner craters and ecological changes in the Quaternary, the surrounding areas have always been considered to determine past climates.


Lut Desert in Iran's southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan and Kerman area. Iran Yardang the unique example of the magnitude and extent of the Lut Desert in the west central formed. The lake is located in the southeast of Iran's South Lut.

materials and methods

In this study, the range of geomorphological evidence Lute lake (lake terraces) and sedimentological (lake sediments) has been paid. The use of documents and library materials (including books, articles and dissertations Persian and English), The use of video sources (including geological maps, satellite imagery sensor Landsat TM, ETM and Digital Elevation Model SRTM 90 meters and Dem 10 meters),  Visit and sampling of the area (s terraces of the lake area and the lake sediments were sampled to confirm terraces) As well as laboratory operations are used.  In this research, field studies in the areas of terraces that have been observed Yardang northeast  And to confirm the marginal lake sediment data for the range of the past, picked up sediment samples were performed. The air over south-eastern region also has been detected in the terraces that And using satellite imagery and digital elevation model, terraces similar to those in the east and the West was determined. Based on height data obtained from the same water level of the lake in the Quaternary terraces around the lake was rehabilitated for Lut،  Lake dewatering range specified in prior periodsAnd the extent of the lake were determined. The tests on sediment samples and the calculation of the indices due to sediment and sediment characteristics   The deposits with an average small to medium sandy sediment conditions confirms Quaternary sediments in the lake margins.

Results and discussion

Check the Lut Desert terraces indicate that the terraces around the plains are not exact heightBut according to the survey depth 330 350 404 meters using digital elevation model and satellite images best match to adapt to the terraces surrounding the lake.  The curves around the lake at different phases of advance and retreat in the designated area.

Finally, our research in the area of sediments on the lake terraces. Based on the average particle deposition on the source, type of transport conditions and sediment deposition depends on conditions index shows energy in layers. The terraces have said the average small to medium sandy sediment conditions confirms margin sediments of Quaternary lake.


Evidence indicates that a relatively shallow lake in the past and there have been low-energy environment. Provisional conditions is affected by evaporation and drying.  As well as different levels of terraces with different heights shows the phases of advance and retreat of the lake
